Welcome to Fir Class!

Hello! I’m Mrs. Allden, and I’ll be your Year 1 teacher this year, with Mrs. Watson as our wonderful teaching assistant.

We are excited to have a fun and busy spring term ahead! In Geography, we’ll explore our local area, while in History, we’ll dive into Communication from the Past and Present, looking at how things have changed within our lifetime. In Design and Technology, the children will have the opportunity to design and build their own structures.

In English, we’ll be reading exciting stories like The Three Little Pigs, and Dogger by Shirley Hughes. Our focus will be on writing sentences with correct punctuation, including capital letters, finger spaces, and full stops. We’ll also continue practising our phonics to help with spelling key words, ensuring the children can use them correctly in all their writing.

In Maths, we’ll build on the children’s understanding of place value. We’ll start by counting, reading, and writing numbers up to 10, then move on to numbers up to 20, and later 50. This will help the children with addition and subtraction, using a variety of resources. We’ll also have lots of fun exploring 2D and 3D shapes through hands-on activities!

In Science, we’ll explore different materials, conducting lots of practical experiments. Our Computing lessons will focus on programming and algorithms, where the children will work with small robots to input data. For PE, we’ll practise net and wall games outdoors, developing attacking and defending skills. Indoors, we’ll focus on dance, working on rhythm, movements, and learning how to match movements to different types of music.
