Hello, Maple Class. Welcome to Year 5!
In Reading lessons, we are starting with the story The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis to support our learning during the autumn term. The children will make predictions about the events in the story, exploring the language that C. S. Lewis used to create wonderful characters and settings. I can’t wait to delve deeply into this imaginative, magical book. The children will also have opportunities each week to read books of their choosing in our reading-for-pleasure slots. After this, we will be moving on to a very emotive book entitled A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. We will look closely at the language the author has used for description and conveying characters’ moods, exploring how they change through the book.
In English, we are using the story The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe as our inspiration for writing lessons. To begin with, the children will focus on grammar activities such as using apostrophes and writing complex sentences. They will then use these skills in their own work. The children will learn how to write an exciting diary entry from one of the book character’s points of view. They will also watch different clips from the film to support them with their writing. During the rest of the year, the children will cover a range of fiction and non-fiction genres, applying the taught grammar effectively.
In Maths, the children are building on their learning from the previous year as we revisit the topic of place value, this time working with numbers up to 1,000,000. The children will then spend a few weeks learning about adding and subtracting numbers, including those with more than four digits. During these units, the children will apply their skills to solve multi-step problems. The children will then spend several weeks looking at factors, prime numbers, square numbers and cube numbers. They will also revisit multiplying and dividing numbers by 10, 100 and 1,000. Also throughout the year, the children will visit the units of fractions and decimals, shape and geometry. Problem-solving and reasoning will be interwoven through all of these units.
In the afternoons, the children are exploring a range of exciting topics. In History, they are learning about the Dunkirk Evacuation and exploring the reasons for the Battle of Britain, after which they will learn about Saxons and Vikings. They are learning about weather and climate in their Geography lessons, reflecting on how global warming is having an impact on our weather (autumn term) before moving onto comparing North America with a European country. Also, they will look at sustainability. In DT, the children will complete a sewing project related to WWII, make a Viking longship and learn some new cooking skills. In Science, the children will observe how plants grow and compare the different life cycles of animals. They will also cover changes in materials, forces and discover all about Earth in space. PE lessons will focus on different skills to apply in games and gymnastic and dance skills. The children are learning about the rights and responsibilities of being a good citizen in PSHE lessons and looking at Sikhism and Christianity in RE this year. Designing web pages using Google Sites is the focus of autumn term’s Computing lessons. Throughout the rest of the year, the children will learn about programming, databases and online safety.
