We have lots of fun learning experiences planned for you in Year 3.

In English, we will be covering a range of genres, such as diary (based on I’ll Take You To Mrs Cole by Nigel Grey, and Matilda by Roald Dahl), instructions (based on How To Trap A T-Rex), setting descriptions (based on Leon and The Place Between by Angela McAllister), twisted fairy tales, adventure stories and non-chronological reports.

Our Maths lessons focus on building upon our prior learning and extending our knowledge of place value, and the four rules of number: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will start to use formal methods of recording our work, especially column addition and column subtraction. Perimeter is a new concept introduced in Year 3. We will continue to use TT Rock Stars to improve our multiplication knowledge.

Our afternoons are filled with engaging lessons. Our History units are based on World War 2 evacuees, the Stone Age and Ancient Egypt. We will be visiting Bewdley Museum to learn all about WW2 and evacuees. In Geography, we are comparing the West Midlands with the coastal county of Cornwall, and looking at climate zones and rivers and oceans. Music lessons come alive with the sound of recorders and singing a disco song called Bringing us Together by Joanna Mangona and Pete Readman. In the spring term, we will cover an opera in conjunction with The Royal Opera House, while in the summer term, we will begin to learn how to play the guitar.

Designing and making a cushion with our textile skills is our autumn focus in DT; however, we will also be practising our culinary skills in relation to WW2 rations. In spring, DT will focus on Stone Age houses and, in summer, an Egyptian shaduf. In RE, we will be learning about Hinduism (Diwali, the River Ganges, and Brahman), and Christianity (the Christmas story, Jesus’s miracles and the Easter story). To further our understanding of different world religions, we plan to visit a mandir in the summer to explore the similarities and differences between this place of worship and a church.

Monday is outdoor PE day, when we develop our football, dodgeball, tennis and rounders skills. On Tuesdays, in our indoor PE lessons, we focus on floor gymnastics, ballet (again with the Royal Opera House), and athletics. Wednesday afternoons are devoted to carrying out lots of different science investigations. Young Einstein, here we come! Now that we’ve been learning to speak Spanish for a couple of years, it’s time to focus on reading and writing, while continuing to improve on our speaking skills. MFL lessons take us from the basics of Spanish greetings, through days of the week and months of the year, to animals, fruits and vegetables, and food and drink. In Computing, we are ‘branching off’ into the exciting world of animation, using the Stop Motion application on our chromebooks.

Please ensure your child’s school uniform and PE kit are clearly labelled and make sure they have a water bottle in school every day.

So, Year 3, let’s make some memories!
